The Mendon Highway Department picks up roadside brush in the fall and spring. Once dates have been set, they are post on the Highway website, and in the Sentinel and Penny Saver.
The remainder of the year, Mendon residents are permitted to bring their brush to the Highway Department and deposit it on the pile. Drop off is only allowed during Highway Department hours of operation. The type of material accepted at the Highway Department is the same as that the Department would pick up along the roadway. NO COMMERCIAL dumping of material is allowed, regardless of the source. All residents must sign in prior to dumping brush.
WHAT WE ACCEPT:
1. Tree trunks, limbs, and woody brush material up to 12' in length and 36" in diameter.
2. Two (2) dump truck loads per address, app. 10 cu. yds. This pertains to pick up, only.
WHAT WE DO NOT ACCEPT:
1. Metal material. This includes any acceptable material listed above that includes metal.
2. Non-wood materials.
3. Tree roots.
5. Any type of lawn or garden debris, including clippings.
6. Lumber, landscape ties, construction materials.
HOW THE BRUSH PICK UP IS CONDUCTED:
Highway personnel utilize the Department's excavator for picking up brush along the roadway, and dump trucks for hauling the material to the storage area on Semmel Road. The pick up follows a general east to west path. Personnel make only one pass through the Town each season, and they do not return to an area once the material is picked up. (HINT: If you have material to put out, make sure you have at least some of it out on the announced starting date. You can always add to the pile. Once you see the pile is gone, you'll know our crew has been by, and not to put any more out till the following announced pick up.) RESIDENTS ARE CAUTIONED NOT TO PLACE BRUSH ON THE SHOULDER OR TRAVELED PORTION OF THE ROAD.
WHAT'S DONE WITH THE BRUSH:
The brush that is collected throughout the year is stored at the Highway Department on Semmel Road. During the fall, a contractor is hired to grind the mulch. The contract includes the removal of the ground material. Mulch is no longer available for residents. This process saves the residents app. $16,000 in taxes.
