What is Chronic Wasting Disease?
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is found in some deer and elk populations in North America. CWD belongs to a family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Although CWD is in the same family of diseases as bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, and scrapie in sheep, it is a distinct disease that has only been found in deer and elk.
