About the Roads in Mendon
The roads within the Town of Mendon generally fall into 4 categories: Private, Town, County, and State.
PRIVATE ROADS are owned and maintained by the property owners adjacent to the roadway. Roadways under construction, generally within development areas, are considered private until such time as the Town accepts ownership (Dedication). These roads remain the responsibility of the developer until the Town's acceptance of ownership.
TOWN ROADS are owned and maintained by the Town of Mendon. Generally, each Town road has a deeded right of way, the width of which varies with each road. Any problems noted on a Town road, or right of way, should be forwarded to the Mendon Highway Department. You can contact Mendon Highway Department at 624-6068.
COUNTY ROADS are owned and maintained by Monroe County. As with Town roads, each County road has an associated right of way. Any problems noted on a County road or right of way should be reported to Monroe County. If a problem associated with a County road or right of way is reported to Mendon Highway Department, the problem has to be relayed to the County Department of Transportation for their review. The Mendon Highway Department may not do any work on a County road without the expressed permission of the County DOT. Phone number for the Monroe County DOT Dispatcher is 753-7750.
STATE ROADS, and associated right of ways, are owned and maintained by New York State. Problems on these roads and right of ways should be reported to the NYS Department of Transportation. Reports of problems on these roads and right of ways to the Mendon Highway Department are forwarded to the NYS DOT. Phone number for the New York State DOT Dispatcher is 586-4514.
