RE:  Mailbox Location and Installation

Dear Mendon Resident:

When installing your mailbox, your convenience and that of the mail carrier is what first comes to mind.  But, you may not realize that there a third party to consider:  The Highway Department.

Almost all mailboxes are installed within the highway right-of-way, and that requires that mailboxes be installed in a proper manner.  Although every effort is taken to avoid post/mailbox damage, it occasionally occurs when roadways are being plowed.

When installing your mailbox, the Highway Department requests that you consider the following:

  1. Place the mailbox so that it is a minimum of 2 feet from the edge of the shoulder,
  2. Use a 4" x 4" treated wood post,
  3. Install the box on the post so that there is a minimum of 42", and maximum of 48", clearance from the ground,
  4. If you are installing a decorative mailbox, consider replacing it during the snow season with a standard mailbox,
  5. Consider use of a metal mailbox.  Plastic/fiberglass boxes tend to become brittle in cold temperatures and are more susceptible to breakage.

The Town of Mendon's policy is to replace any mailbox and/or post damaged by the Highway Department with a standard metal mailbox and 4" x 4" treated wooden post.

If you have any questions, please contact my office.
