APRIL 27TH UPDATE

TAXPAYERS!

The County Exec has extended the 3% interest period through May 31, 2020 related to the payment of 2020 Town and County taxes. If you are making your 4th installment (or any payment) you only need to pay 3% interest on the tax amount - not the normal April 4.5% for April nor the 6% for May. There will also be no $2 Notification Fee added in May as normally would have been.

Also - the County is absorbing the fee that was normally charged if you paid your taxes with a credit card through their website. So the safest, quickest, easiest way to pay any balance on your taxes through the month of May would be to use a credit card and go to the County's Real Property Portal.

Emergency Order

APRIL 1ST UPDATE

ATTENTION TAXPAYERS!

The County Executive will be clarifying his Emergency Order regarding 2020 Town and County tax payments.

All payments made in April will pay 3% interest (the interest paid in March) instead of the 4.5% you would normally pay in April. No payments will be completely interest free, but you will be saving that additional 1.5%.

An easy way to check and/or pay your tax amount due is through the County’s Real Property Portal. You can access it by going to the County’s website and clicking on the View/Pay Taxes Online link under the heading Top Online Services, which is a box on the righthand side of their home screen. The amounts shown there reflect the correct amounts due.

County’s website:

https://www.monroecounty.gov/

Or, this link should take you to it directly:

https://www.monroecounty.gov/etc/rp

In the County Exec’s original Emergency Order, the County said that they were absorbing the user fee normally charged taxpayers for paying online. That makes paying by credit card online through the County most likely the safest, fastest, and most cost-effective way to pay your taxes. The Town loses nothing if you do it that way.

CANCELATION

The Comprehensive Plan Citizen's Advisory Committee meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, 2020, has been canceled.

MARCH 31ST UPDATE

ATTENTION TAXPAYERS!

MARCH 21ST UPDATE

On March 20th County Executive Bello issued an Emergency Order PROHIBITING “…the in-person payment of Monroe County real property taxes in County and town facilities during this State of Emergency.”

In the Order, provisions were made to defer the due date of the third installment of the tax bill from March 31, 2020 to April 30, 2020. This means that if the taxpayer has been utilizing the installment plan and has made the first and second installments, the third installment may be paid on or before April 30 without any additional interest added on top of the March interest. So if you come in during April with your March and April payments, you will pay the March installment amount (which includes the March 3% interest) and the April installment amount (which includes the April 4.5% interest). The Order does not relieve the taxpayer from paying any interest at all, nor does it affect taxpayers making full payments in April – they will pay April interest.

Also, the Order states that Monroe County will “…absorb user fees charged for online payments made through the County’s vendor.” If a taxpayer wants to pay by credit card on the County’s website (www.monroecounty.gov) there will be no fees added.

Payments made by mail will continue to be accepted.

Click here to read the Order.

The Town of Mendon has a mail slot on the left-hand side of the West Main Street door (not the parking lot doors). This slot drops into a secure lockbox inside the building. This lockbox is still being checked during the current situation. Please put your payment in an envelope to make sure checks stay with the stubs. Payments are being processed and deposits being made as quickly as the situation allows. Payments that are incorrect for any reason will take a little longer to handle and return, your patience is appreciated.

MARCH 20TH UPDATE

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation and the increased restrictions set forth by the state, the Mendon Town Hall will remain closed for the week beginning March 22nd. The Youth Center and Community Center remained closed, as is the Court. All Town meetings remain canceled.

Staff will be checking emails, phone messages and the Town Hall drop box on a periodic basis. We appreciate your patience and consideration during this unusual time.

We encourage residents to utilize the US Postal Service or the West Main Street door mail slot to make a tax payment, or to get any paperwork to the Town. Work will be processed and returned as soon as practicable.

Please check the Town’s website and Facebook page for updates and notifications concerning when normal operations will resume.

MARCH 18TH UPDATE

This afternoon, Supervisor Moffitt issued a Proclamation declaring a Local State of Emergency in the Town of Mendon related to the COVID-19 outbreak. By doing this the Town hopes to bring more awareness to the current situation and ensure that Town residents and businesses are able to take advantage of any type of recovery funds or assistance that may become available in the future.

The Village of Honeoye Falls is not included in this proclamation because, although the Village is physically located in the Town of Mendon, their government has the authority to make this decision if they choose to do so.

Below is the text of the Proclamation.

 MARCH 16TH UPDATE

From John Moffitt, Mendon Town Supervisor

Preventing the spread of COVID-19 is a community challenge, and we, as a community, will face this challenge head-on. The Town of Mendon is taking extra precautions to protect our residents and help keep our community healthy and safe. We are in constant communication with the county, school, village, local churches and organizations, and we are participating in a coordinated effort. Changes to Town policies and procedures are being updated daily, so please visit the Town website www.townofmendon.org for the most up-to-date information.

The Mendon Public Library, Mendon Community Center, Mendon Youth Center, and the Historical Society remain closed until further notice. Per New York State, the Mendon Town Court is also closed. If you have questions about a court appointment, please call (585) 624-6064.

Our Town Hall and Highway Department are currently open and operational, however, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and abide by social distancing recommendations, please avoid coming into either facility in-person. Instead, please contact the appropriate department by phone, email, or FAX (585) 624-6065 whenever possible. Additionally, The Town Hall has a secure drop box that is accessed through a mail slot on the left hand side of the West Main Street entrance. It will be checked multiple times per day. Please consider using this for tax payments or to drop-off any other communication that fits in a standard size envelope.

The Town of Mendon is following the recommendation of Monroe County’s Department of Public Health to cancel or postpone all Town-related gatherings with more than fifty people in attendance. The following events are canceled: Senior Citizen trip to Cartwrights Maple Tree Inn on Friday, March 20th, and the Planning Board meeting scheduled for March 18th. The cancellation of any future meetings or events will be handled on a week-by-week basis and announced on our website.

As we work through this challenging time, it is important to take care of one another, and to check-in with family and neighbors, especially if they are vulnerable to respiratory illnesses. And remember, each of us can help slow the spread of COVID-19 by calling a physician before going to the Emergency Room or Urgent Care if symptoms like a new cough, fever, or shortness of breath develop.

The safety and health of our residents is my top priority. These precautions are made out of an abundance of caution, and in an effort to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

We have an incredibly caring community, and we will get through this by depending on one another, by sharing if we have more than we need, and by asking for help if we need it. There are resources available such as the local food cupboard, Visiting Nurse Service and Meals on Wheels that continue to operate and help our most vulnerable residents.

So please, take the necessary precautions to keep yourself, your family and your neighbors healthy and safe. Feel free to reach out to Town Hall by phone or email - we are here for you, and will continue to provide updates as needed.
