SUPERVISOR MOFFITT UNVEILS 2019 BUDGET: KEEPS PROPERTY TAXES FLAT, CUTS SPENDING, AND EXPANDS SERVICES
Mendon Town Supervisor John Moffitt presented his proposed 2019 Town Budget, honoring a commitment to stand strong on fiscal responsibility and tax stability. The Town Supervisor’s 2019 Town Budget, totaling around $4.8 million, keeps the property tax rate flat and reduces overall spending by $93,344. The budget maintains the 2018 tax cut for Town and Village residents.
“I am proud to submit a budget for 2019 that keeps the tax rate flat and puts interests of Mendon taxpayers and their families first,” said Moffitt. “Each year I take great pride in creating a budget that will provide a stable and secure environment. Best yet, this year’s property tax rate maintains last year’s tax cut and will keep more money in the pockets of our taxpayers. Moving forward taxpayers can continue to expect a Mendon Town government that lives within its means, strives to do more with less and always puts the interests of the taxpayers first.”
Keeps Tax Rate Flat; Complies with State
Property Tax Cap:
Residents in the Town of Mendon are fortunate to have one of the lowest property tax rates in Monroe County. The only Towns in Monroe County with a lower tax rate are Riga, which generates $2 million in revenue a year from a landfill, Henrietta which has a significant commercial tax base and no brush pick-up, and Perinton which generates $1.8 million in revenue a year from a landfill.
The New York State Property Tax Cap was implemented in 2011 in an effort to limit local government’s overall growth. While many towns in New York State were forced to override the Property Tax Cap last year, the forward-thinking and fiscal discipline of the 2019 Town Budget puts the Town of Mendon in compliance with the Property Tax Cap.
“I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Town Board Members John Hagreen, Cynthia Carroll, Tom Dubois, and Mike Roberts. We worked to deliver a budget keeps the tax rate flat while keeping the Town of Mendon a great place for families to live and work,” said Moffitt.
Commitment to Deliver Quality-of-Life Services:
The 2019 Mendon Town Budget guarantees to deliver services which remain vital to the town’s high quality of life. This year’s budget increases funding for the Senior Citizens Program by 17.5%, allocates $5,000 for the Hamlet Beautification Projects, and provides funding to resurface the community tennis courts at Mendon Center.
“I am proud of both Highway Superintendent Bud Smith and Town Clerk Jim Merzke for their great partnership in providing high quality services while remaining committed to a smaller, smarter, and more efficient local government,” continued Moffitt. “Efficient services and cost savings have allowed us to fund a second brush pick-up, purchase much-needed highway equipment without the extra cost of borrowing money, and create an annual event to honor our veterans and their families.”
The Mendon Town Board passed the preliminary budget at their October 15th meeting. A public hearing will be held on the budget on November 19th, 2018 at 7:00 pm at the Mendon Town Hall (see legal notice below).

MONROE COUNTY VETERANS DISCOUNT CARD
The Monroe County Veterans Discount Card Program is an initiative between Monroe County, the Veterans Outreach Center and local merchants to recognize and thank our County’s more than 60,000 veterans, reservists and individuals serving on active duty.
Under the Monroe County Veterans Discount Card Program, honorably discharged veterans will be issued an identification card by the County that identifies them as a veteran.
Participating County merchants have agreed to honor this card by providing these individuals with discounts on purchases or services, or some other special offer. Individuals in the reserves or currently on active duty will be able to present their military identification cards to participating merchants and will receive these same discounts.
Although this program could never fully acknowledge or thank these individuals for their service and sacrifices made to protect our country, in some small measure it is a way we can demonstrate our appreciation.
